Formlabs Releases Formlabs Form 4 Desktop Resin 3D Printer
In April 2024, Xpiens learned, Formlabs globally launched the Form 4 and Form 4B professional 3D printers, a monumental advancement in desktop resin 3D printing. These models introduce the innovative Low Force Display™ (LFD) technology, an updated resin library, and enhanced automated post-processing features, significantly enhancing the user experience.

Unmatched Speed Increases Productivity
Formlabs Form 4 prints at a speed 2 to 5 times faster than its predecessor, the Form 3+. This improvement dramatically accelerates product development cycles, enabling professionals like designers, engineers, manufacturers, healthcare providers, and innovators to explore limitless design possibilities and swiftly adapt to market changes. The increased speed not only expedites the development cycle but also supports rapid market introduction of innovative products.
"With over a decade of industry experience and continuous technological innovation, we are confident that the Form 4 will be our most exceptional SLA 3D printer yet. Its superior reliability and speed make it a powerful tool in product development processes, radically transforming the journey from creative conception to product realization," said Lobovsky.
Six Key Features of Formlabs Form 4
1. Enhanced Printing Speed
With a 30% larger build volume and speeds 2 to 5 times faster than the Form 3+, most printing tasks can be completed within two hours, and small parts in just minutes.2. Advanced LFD™ Printing Engine
Unlike laser and galvanometer technology, the Form 4 uses Low Force Stereolithography™ (LFS) with features like high-power backlighting, proprietary peel textures, Light Processing Unit 4, and a dual-layer flexible film resin tank, ensuring high success rates.3. Unparalleled Reliability
Thanks to validated print settings, precise heating systems, force sensing technology, and debris detection, each print is guaranteed to meet expectations.4. Industrial-Quality Print Resolution
Offering 50-micron resolution, highly collimated light sources, advanced pixel smoothing technology, and gentle-touch supports, the parts printed meet industrial-quality standards in detail and precision.
5. Intuitive and Easy to Use
The Form 4 features an operation process so straightforward that even beginners can master it within 15 minutes. It also boasts automated resin loading, easy material replacement, automated post-processing, and a quick-release build platform.6. Reduced Cost per Piece by 40%
Durable resin tanks (usable for over 75,000 layers) and a Light Processing Unit (usable for over one million layers), combined with a 33% reduction in resin costs and a 30% increase in print volume, significantly reduce the cost per product while increasing output by 3.5 times.
Material Library Expansion
In addition to introducing new printers, Formlabs has expanded its resin material library by adding six new resins, reconfiguring four universal resins for faster printing speeds, improved toughness, and color.
The Form 4 is also compatible with over 17 other high-performance materials from Formlabs' library, and it plans to regularly introduce new materials to meet evolving demands.
The Form 4B is tailored for dental and healthcare professionals, compatible with 13 biocompatible materials, providing more possibilities for specialized applications.
Xpiens' Personal Opinion
The print area of this printer is relatively small, at only 20.0 × 12.5 × 21.0 cm. Currently, SLA 3D printers used in dentistry generally have around a 10.1-inch print area, while this printer has only about 8.3 inches. Of course, if the print success rate and speed are as advertised, it is still worth purchasing. After all, the printer's software system is independently developed by Formlabs.
